PROOF OF RESIDENCY
When you come into one of our offices to title and register a vehicle, we are required by law to verify ownership transfers with a valid, government-issued photo ID for all vehicle owners.
If your ID was not issued by the State of Montana, we are also required to ask you for current proof of residency. Acceptable forms of proof include:
- Rental/Lease agreement for your Gallatin County residence (signed/dated within the last year by the property owner/manager, specifically listing YOUR NAME as a tenant)
- Mortgage Document
- Paid property tax record (for a Gallatin County address, owned by YOU, not an LLC or a trust)
- Warranty deed for your home, which can be found in the closing documents binder received at the time you purchased your home
Or two of the following:
- Address Confidentiality Program (ACP) card in addition to residency letter issued by Office of Consumer Protection and Victim Services.
- Bank statement or credit card statement no older than 30 days
- Certified court documents (for example: court order, judgment, subpoena, warrant)
- Expired (for one year or less) Montana driver license or ID
- First Class mail with your PHYSICAL address in Gallatin County (postmarked no longer than 30 days prior)
- Insurance policy
- Letter from local Geographic Information System (GIS) agency, for example a 911 letter
- Montana hunting/fishing license or permit
- MSU Cat Card
- Pay stub, no older than 30 days
- School transcript or report card
- Utility bill showing the service address, no older than 30 days
- Voter registration
If you have just gotten your Montana ID, even if it is the paper copy, you can use that ID to title and register your vehicles without having to provide any additional documentation regarding your residency.
