REFUNDS: Can I get a refund for some or all of my registration fees?
Refund policy:
The State of Montana does not offer prorated refunds for people who have paid for a year and then moved to another state, or renewed their registration and then sold the vehicle.
The State of Montana only allows for a refund when the following occurs before the titling and registration within 40 days, or 40 days after a renewal was completed, and only in the case a vehicle was totaled in an accident, in which insurance may reimburse the vehicle owner in this case.
In the instance described above, you can submit a Request for Refund form to Montana Motor Vehicle Division, PO Box 201431, Helena, MT 59610. To be considered, the vehicle owner must include:
1. The original financial statement/receipt from our CARS system
2. Any registration tabs you received, if requesting refund of fees paid online using the Vehicle Registration Renewal Service
3. Any other documentation that will support your refund request (i.e. Bill of Sale, police report, insurance report, etc.)
Please allow a minimum of 30 days for a response. No refunds are processed at the county level without State approval.
