Process for Vacant Trustee Appointment to Bozeman School District #7 Board of Trustees

The Gallatin County Superintendent of Schools learned that a vacancy was created within the Bozeman School District No. 7 Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees did not fill the vacancy within sixty days of its occurrence. Thus, Montana law provides that the Gallatin County Superintendent of Schools shall make the appointment to fill the vacant Trustee position. Section 20-3-309(1), MCA.

Montana law does not create a timetable for an appointment by the Superintendent. The Board’s next regular monthly meeting will take place on June 14, 2021. It is therefore the Superintendent’s intention to expeditiously fill the vacant Trustee position.

To ensure equitable consideration of all candidates, an application for consideration of the appointment was created to obtain individuals’ general information and experience for assessing their suitability for service on the Bozeman Board. These applications will be used as the basis for the Superintendent to select individuals to interview. The applications, once submitted, are deemed public records and may be examined in the office of the Gallatin County Superintendent of Schools after the submission window has closed.

Applicant interviews will be conducted by the Superintendent in the Community Room of the Gallatin County Courthouse. A “focus group” comprised of representatives from the Bozeman School District and individuals representing various interests in the community (i.e., business, professional, civic, military, clergy, etc.) will be invited to offer direct feedback on the candidates to the Superintendent. The public may also attend in person or remotely and are invited to provide input to the Superintendent by email.

To apply for the appointment, interested individuals should contact the Gallatin County Superintendent of Schools’ office and request an “Application for Trustee Appointment to Bozeman School District #7 Board of Trustees.” The application must be returned to the Superintendent with a letter stating the reasons for wanting to serve on the Bozeman Board of Trustees by 5 PM on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 (10 business days from the date of this posting).

Individuals selected for interviews will be contacted by Thursday, June 10, 2021, and public interviews will be held on Friday, June 11, 2021. Provided that a successor is determined, notice of the Superintendent’s appointment will be made in writing by June 14, 2021.
